The world is incredibly dynamic: new technologies, fresh trends, more opportunities, wider choice. What was relevant a couple of years ago may become completely unclaimed today. This applies to technology, music, styles of the image, fashion trends, interior design, but it does not apply at all to coffee, and especially Lavazza. This magical drink has not left the top of the most popular world popularity for many years.
Sheikh, Shepherd or Prophet Mohammed? Origin stories
Coffee has been known to mankind since ancient times. Nobody can name the exact date of its appearance today. Some sources say that it was discovered about 600 years ago, others claim that its history goes back a couple of millennia. As for the name, scientists also do not have a common point of view: some researchers believe that it comes from the Arabic "kaue" (strength and energy), while others claim that it was named after the province of Kaffa, which is located in southern Ethiopia.
Linguists reveal to us many other versions: the Dutch "koffie" (1598), "kahve", as well as kofiy, kohey, kof, qahwah. But in Kaffa itself, for some reason the infusion was called "bunna". There are interesting and mysterious legends about the origin of this invigorating phenomenon.
Sheikh Omar
According to a long tradition, the ruler Abd al-Qadir was a famous Ethiopian physician. He devoted his life to the study of the gifts of nature, the invention of medicines. The Yemeni sheikh managed to heal even the most severe patients who were considered hopeless. One day while walking, Omar saw a small tree with red berries. Having plucked a few seeds, he brought them with him and began to experiment.
Having made an infusion on the basis of dried powder, the healer began to drink it for several days, noting the changes in his state of health. He noticed that his mood was consistently good, vigor and clarity of thoughts were noted, and his working capacity was at a high level all the time. Noting the positive properties of the broth, Omar began to add it to his tinctures and preparations, and also included it in his daily diet.
Kaldi Shepherd from Ethiopia
Around 850, accompanying his animals in the highlands (according to various sources, these were goats, rams or sheep), Kaldi noticed that his four-legged wards were very fond of feasting on the leaves and fruits of low wild trees growing on the slopes of the mountains. After such a simple meal, the goats and rams became very playful, active and cheerful.
Observing such dramatic changes, Kaldym himself decided to taste the outlandish berries that vaguely resemble dark red cherries. Having chewed a couple of grains, the man felt a surge of unprecedented vigor and excellent mood, and the constantly annoying drowsiness dispelled him, and did not bother Kaldi for 3 days. Returning to the settlement, the vigorous shepherd shared his discovery with the abbot of the local monastery, presenting the monks with a recipe for a wonderful invigorating infusion. The attendants drank a decoction of dried grain shells, and thanks to its tonic effect, they did not fall asleep during long services. The legend itself originated in the 1670s.
Mahomet
One legend told us about how the Archangel Gabriel came to the exhausted and dying Mohammed and brought him a small vessel with unknown contents. It was coffee. Having drunk a miraculous gift, the prophet felt how the forces returned to him again, and he again continued to embody his plan - to build an empire of powerful Islam.
Europe
Coffee came to Europe around 1590 thanks to Venetian merchants and a doctor from Italy, Prosper Alpini, who told about it to ambassadors from Venice traveling to Egypt. In 1626 it was already drunk in Rome, and in 1720 the first coffee shop "Cafe Florian" was opened in Venice. As you can see, the birthplace of the Lavazza brand became the first European country to which coffee beans were brought.
Further, such cafes began to open in France, England, Austria, Germany and other states. The clergy tried to rebel against the emergence of a new culture, calling the novelty "black Turkish blood", having a detrimental effect on the souls of Europeans, but as we see now, nothing came of them.
