Who is UTZ Certified?

Who is UTZ Certified?

Looking at coffees from renowned manufacturers such as lavazza, movenpick and Julius meinl, you can see a small colorful emblem on the packaging that says "UTZ Сertified". This small mark indicates the many benefits that the product has. In addition to coffee, this inscription can also be found on tea and cocoa packaging. So, back to the benefits that manufacturers receive by participating in the voluntary certification program of the global non-profit organization UTZ Certified:

Strengthening brand reputation, increasing the competitiveness of products and the level of consumer confidence;

  • proof of high quality coffee, tea and cocoa;
  • indicator of non-discrimination, gender inequality and child labor in growing and harvesting;
  • indicator of compliance with the technology of growing coffee beans, their further processing and correct fermentation;
  • rational use of natural resources, protection of tropical forests and nature, maintenance of eco-balance.

The sustainable development program is designed to independently control and assist planters and farmers, as well as to improve the quality of finished products, agricultural productivity, and strengthen customer loyalty. Affecting the social sphere, the management of participating companies, growing crops on plantations, as well as the environment, the system fully covers the entire cycle, from growing crops to roasting and packaging finished products.

UTZ Certified is the largest international association for the certification of coffee and tea products

The official date of foundation of the non-profit organization is 2002. UTZ Certified is headquartered in Amsterdam and employs approximately 100 people. The company was originally named UTZ Kapeh. The word "Kapeh" from the language of the Mayan tribe is translated as "excellent coffee." In 2007, the name of the organization was transformed into UTZ Certified. Today, the most famous coffee brands, such as lavazza, as well as cocoa producers (Nestle, Mars) and companies engaged in the sale of tea, take part in the program of their own free will.

A prerequisite for participation in the program is also that the end user can see the entire chain of production, transportation, storage and supply of products in real time (track-and-trace system). All certified lavazz products can be tracked through a specially designed website called www.goodinsideportal.org.

Thanks to this resource, it is always possible to trace the locality and region of origin of tea or coffee products. On the farms of the Association, as far as possible, only ecological energy sources are used, forest stands are preserved and less water is consumed.

The transparency and openness of the entire production process, which can be monitored in real time, speaks of the high degree of responsibility of the manufacturer, and his responsible attitude towards consumers. Participating planters, farmers, cooperatives, growers and corporations comply with the rules of the Association Code. The set of rules includes methods for the most correct cultivation of crops, social and other norms, as well as guidelines for the careful use of natural resources and soil. More details on the content of the code can be found on the official website of the Association - https://utz.org/.

What is the purpose of the manufacturer's companies being certified?

A 100% guarantee of the quality of a certified product, which is indicated by an easily recognizable mark on the packaging, increases consumer confidence, contributes to increased sales and entry into new markets. Coffee, as well as tea and cocoa, certified by the association, are sold in 20 countries around the world: USA, Canada, England, Sweden, Germany, Ukraine, Belgium, Norway, the Netherlands, etc.

During its participation, the UTZ Certified Good Inside system in practice has proven its effectiveness in improving the quality of finished products and the entire production cycle. The organization's representatives annually conduct an audit to check the implementation of the code by the participants, and also carry out accreditation in accordance with the ISO 65 standard. The influence of the organization does not extend to the pricing policy. Prices are determined as a result of negotiations between companies and corporations and the owners of the plantations on which the tea or coffee is grown.

A small bright emblem adorning the packaging of a product significantly increases its competitiveness, adding significant advantages to it and enhancing the image of the manufacturing company.
